Cardiac Imaging Leads to Substantial Radiation Exposure

While the association between radiation exposure from medical tests and increased risk of cancer is debatable, data from a study published online July 7, 2010, ahead of print in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggest that targeted efforts are needed to minimize the cumulative effective doses imparted by cardiac imaging procedures.

Using administrative claims data, researchers led by Jersey Chen, MD, MPH, of the Yale School of Medicine (New Haven, CT), looked at 952,420 insured adults aged 18 to 64 years in 5 US health care markets between 2005 and 2007. Among them, 90,121 (9.5%) had undergone at ....
