SCAI Announces its Inaugural Class of Emerging Leader Mentorship Fellows
The SCAI Emerging Leader Mentorship (ELM) Program in partnership with Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) announced its first class of ELM Fellows this week. Ten early career interventional cardiologists were selected from a group of 62 outstanding candidates. Selection was based on the applicants' accomplishments since completing training, including original research, publications, regional reputation, letters of recommendation, presentations and public speaking skills, and demonstration of leadership potential. Those chosen include physician-scholars from across the United States. Nine of the physicians work in academic settings and one in private practice. One is a Pediatric Interventionalist. Three of the prize recipients are women. The selection committee, led by Dr. Srihari S. Naidu of Winthrop University Hospital in New York, consisted of nine established physicians representing the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF).
The two-year ELM program, conceived initially by the SCAI with collaboration from the ACC and CRF, was tasked with finding and mentoring the future leaders in the field of interventional cardiology. As the Program is ongoing, the goal is to create a robust pipeline from which all partnering interventional cardiology organizations can draw new talent, energy, and ideas. Each of these promising young leaders will be matched with a personal mentor with similar interests, will receive funding toward research and other initiatives, and will participate in leadership training seminars annually at the Scientific Sessions of the SCAI, ACC and TCT. Each will be given opportunities to present their work and expertise at the Scientific Sessions, and will be offered participation on key committees within each of the societies. The program is funded by SCAI with additional grants from industry.
ELM Fellows include:
- J. Dawn Abbott, Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI
