Jason Kahn Fellowship in Medical Journalism

TCTMD.com, the cardiology news site published by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF), is now open to applications for its Jason Kahn Fellowship in Medical Journalism. The Fellowship was established in 2015, to honor the late News Editor of TCTMD.com.

To Apply:

To be considered for the Fellowship, please submit a resume, cover letter, and 3 writing samples via email to Caitlin Cox at ccox@crf.org.

Note: The application deadline for 2020 is March 1.

One fellow will be chosen to complete a 9-week summer internship (4 days/week) onsite at CRF’s offices in Manhattan, working with the journalists and editors who make up the TCTMD news team. Pay is $17 per hour (7.5-hr workday) and class credit can be arranged with the participant’s respective school program. Exact start date, hours, and duration are flexible based on any school-specific requirements. Experience in medical/healthcare journalism and some familiarity with cardiology are a plus. Ideal candidates are those currently earning master’s degrees in science/medical journalism or a related field.

Duties center around reporting cardiology news for TCTMD. The fellow will gain experience in understanding the cardiology field, analyzing medical studies, interviewing sources, writing, editing, copy editing, and leveraging social media for interacting with our sources and audience. Other tasks may include working on news graphics, researching sources such as PR contacts, and providing general support to the Editorial department of CRF.

This September, the fellow will also potentially have the opportunity to attend CRF’s annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) meeting with the TCTMD news team, to cover late-breaking news as it’s presented in Miami, FL.

Who We Are:

TCTMD.com is an independent news site that reports on developments in cardiology and in medicine more generally for an audience of health professionals. It is published by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, a nonprofit headquartered in New York City that is dedicated to research and education in the broad subspecialty of interventional cardiology and endovascular medicine.

Jason Kahn, the former News Editor of TCTMD, worked at CRF for 11 years until his death in 2014 at age 45.

In his tenure, Kahn transformed the cardiology news coverage of TCTMD from a single-person operation into a vibrant editorial team. He received an undergraduate degree in Communications from the University of Michigan and an MA in Journalism from NYU’s Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program. The Jason Kahn Fellowship in Medical Journalism, established in Jason’s memory, is given each year to an aspiring medical journalist who works with, and is mentored by, the TCTMD staff.
